"My songs are collections of thoughts that I usually don’t talk about with people. So they’re ugly and raw, but I’ve realized that that side of me is honest and real, and I think a lot of people are scared of that when it comes to themselves."

- Pat Magada

Whether you’re the one who was left heartbroken or the one who ended the relationship, breaking up is never easy. Letting go of someone you’ve spent weeks, months, or even years of treasured memories with, seems almost impossible to let go of. You’re not only letting go of someone but also letting go of a part of yourself as well. When breakups happen, the world you both built together, brick by brick, begins to tumble down at your feet.

“I was just falling, fading away, where were you?“

Pat Magada, an Oregon Coast-based singer-songwriter released his newest track “Erase You” which knows exactly how you feel. The song was written around 3 in the morning during #sentihours, the perfect time to reminisce on memories and just let all your vulnerability show through. You can hear the genuine pain and emotion as you listen to this soulful track. Pat shares that the song talks about walking away from relationships that no longer serve us.

“From my perspective “Erase You” feels the same as letting go of someone. I’ve had friendships and relationships where I needed to walk away, where I knew the connection was no longer healthy, and yet I still wanted it to continue. We take in traits, lessons, inside jokes, etc., etc. from people we encounter, and when we have to erase them from our life, it feels like we also erase parts of ourselves.”

The overall production of the song was just a poetic musical masterpiece. At the beginning of the song, you can hear the synth pads panning both left and right giving listeners that sense of disorientation. This is exactly how breaking up with someone initially feels like, it’s confusing and makes you feel so unsafe. However, they begin to add an entire orchestra which then commands the entire song. Adding in the orchestral track changed the role of the singer, from being sad and down, to standing up and realizing why this person is no longer healthy for you. It translated to me as a way of taking control of our emotions, regaining that lost strength, and finding ourselves again. As it transitions to the string section, it feels like pain and vulnerability that eventually flows into a strong sense of freedom and closure. The uplifting sensation translated to me as a form of acceptance to the pain of losing someone.

“My songs are collections of thoughts that I usually don’t talk about with people. So they’re ugly and raw, but I’ve realized that that side of me is honest and real, and I think a lot of people are scared of that when it comes to themselves. People would rather ignore their feelings until they explode than feel it, learn from it, and move on."—Pat Magada on vulnerability.
