One of the most important things to us is that our music makes listeners feel something.”

Certain things in this world can’t be explained—pure rational thought can’t explain some concepts and we as people look for ways to do so. One of these things is love. Sometimes we feel an intense connection to someone and it’s something unique to those people that others around them can’t understand. This is what Manila-based duo SYLAS explores in their latest release “Closer (Time Slows Down)”, a beautifully executed track that tries to describe the intense emotions that come with a connection.

The song Closer (Time Slows Down)” speaks on the feeling of falling deeply in love with someone and having that connection that even you both might not truly grasp. It speaks on being vulnerable with someone but not in a negative way, but rather finding peace through this vulnerability.

The lyrics are conveyed by the duo’s vocalist and songwriter, Stephanie Belle, and her vocals bring about this vulnerable yet peaceful tone to the song. The production of the song was done by her counterpart, Patrick Campbell. The track uses an electric guitar which brings about this dark and nostalgic atmosphere to the overall song. It’s a unique sound that contrasts the usually bright and pop sound that is prominent in the Philippines, and it brings the alternative sound that reminds us of artists like SG Lewis and Flume.

SYLAS as a duo has only been in the music scene for a year, with both Patrick and Steph pursuing music individually previously. Within this year, they have achieved things other artists can only dream of, like being signed to Warner Music PH and having their tracks included in several editorial Spotify playlists. They have performed as well in TEDxBritishSchoolManila and the Joy Ruckus Festival, which are noteworthy considering they have only been active for a year.

SYLAS is a duo to look out for in the coming months or years. They bring a unique darker tone, which is reminiscent of artists like Tove Lo and Flume. They have multiple singles planned for the coming months and they mention that this dives down into that much more experimental sound, so make sure to follow them to stay updated!
