"GUESS U KNOW I GOT NO TIME FOR YO’ STUPID SHOW ANOTHA DRAMA MAMA"

- Alex Bruce

Female representation in Hip-Hop has slowly been growing over the past few years. A breath of fresh air in a male-dominated genre. Names like Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, and Doja Cat have been taking over the airwaves as of late, but the Philippines also has its own leading female artists in Hip-Hop one of them is 14-year-old Hip-Hop and R&B artist Alex Bruce, one of the youngest names in the female Hip-Hop space brings her signature thought-provoking rap style in her latest single "Fake Friends".

"Fake Friends" is a track that many teenagers in Alex Bruce's age can relate to, speaking on the unnecessary drama that teenage years can bring to one's life. In this track, she tells us that she refuses to be a part of it, instead, taking a much more mature approach and avoiding drama unlike a lot of other people her age. The song is delivered through witty and playful bars using catchy references such as the Eenie Meenie Miney Mo nursery rhyme, and a reference to the famous line in Forrest Gump ("Run Forrest, Run!") later in the song

The production on the track can only be described as unorthodox compared to the usual trap and melodic beats we hear on Hip-Hop today. It was produced by Cursebox and Brian Lotho, and the rather unorthodox style was achieved with various instruments like brass, drums, and bells, all perfectly complementing Alex's rapping. It's a beat you would hear coming from someone like Rico Nasty, and yet Alex Bruce nails it perfectly.

Alex Bruce is not a new name to the Philippine music industry, first making waves in 2018 at the age of just 11 with her song "Mind As A Weapon", followed by "Dopest" and "Pull it Off" in 2019 at the age of 12. She was signed under Sony Music Philippines alongside Ben&Ben, Syd Hartha, and Nathan and Mercury. She gained attention as she was not only the youngest but also the only Hip-Hop act in the line-up. She draws inspiration from Ruby Ibarra, even covering the artist's song, "Who I Am" on multiple shows she has done. She has performed multiple times on Wish 107.5, gaining almost 5 million views from those videos alone.

Alex Bruce is an artist to watch in the coming years, being in the rap game at such a young age shows that this artist has yet to reach her prime, but with 6 single releases already under her belt, she's well on her way to making a name for herself.
